Training - Be prompt, arrive ten minutes before your session is due to start, remember to sign in ...but do not go onto the pitch until your session starts unless a coach is present. Undercut goal shots must not be attempted at the goal facing the access path on the upper astro at Felsted. Bring mouthguards and shinpads and something to drink. Sticks may be borrowed at U8 level. Please wear appropriate clothing especially in cold weather – if you need to keep warm, wear an undershirt (or two) under your Blue Hornets hoodie. Gloves and hats are fine in the winter.
Parental consent forms - must be completed before you can participate and can be found on the website. Fees must be paid before you can be selected for a match; if you are not a member you are not insured! Invoices for the new season will be sent out after REGISTRATION DAY.
Coaches – these are all volunteers who give up their time willingly! Please treat them with respect, listen carefully to instructions and work hard to improve your game and have fun! If you want to join the coaching team or learn to coach please just ask!

Young Coaches/Duke of Edinburgh Award – as in previous years, we encourage our older juniors to come along and help coach younger groups; we particularly welcome those helping out as part of their Duke of Edinburgh service. We are also offering discounts on subs for those who do regular junior coaching.
Coaching and team managing help - We rely to a large extent on parents, both playing club members and non-playing helpers and, as the junior section has expanded, we need ever more help with admin, kit sales, coaching and umpiring. It does not have to be a 24/7 commitment and we would be very grateful if parents could offer any tangible support. Please contact Gill if you can offer any help, however modest. There is a box on the membership form where you can offer help!
Matches – For the U8’ s there are friendly matches against local oppositions. For the U10’s and U12’s these include the Essex League for A teams and the North League for B and C teams. There are also the In2Hockey county and regional tournaments (sunject to qualification) on top of friendlies. The U14 Boys and Girls enter the EHC tournaments for A teams and the Alliance League for B teams as well as playing friendlies at 11 a side and 7 a side (for U13s).
Selection – Selection is done as fairly as possible given all the information on every child a coach holds within his/her squad. Please remember that all coaches are volunteers and questions regarding selection should bear this in mind! The A teams are selected primarily on merit but also on attendance and attitude. If a squad has an A and a B team then the B team will try and incorporate all players at some point during the season although not necessarily on an even basis also considering ability, attitude, attendance etc. If a squad has multiple teams then all but the lowest will be selected on merit (and attendance and attitude) with only the lowest team trying to give all remaining players some match time. Please remember that no junior can be selected until subs payments have been made! Please respond to all selection emails as soon as possible because a huge amount of time is expended by coaches in chasing up teams for matches.
Senior Hockey – Many junior players are very welcome at adult sessions. Those over 13 are welcome to attend midweek training and play in senior matches on Saturdays subject to selection – see website for details and contact the relevant Chair of Selection. Be aware however, that senior selectors are looking for regular commitment and find it difficult to slot juniors into teams on an occasional basis. Note that we regard U18 and increasingly U16 players as part of the senior section of the club. They are expected to play with the seniors if possible and attend senior trials; training should be done with the seniors during mid-week sessions.
Kit – Our official kit providers are Out There Sports on Dunmow High Street. Players should have a Hornets shirt, socks and any blue shorts or scorts for matches. The hoodies are ideal for training and matches too.
Child Protection - The Club’s Welfare Officer is Denise Hanley, email@example.com . Our policies and procedures are available on the website www.braintreehc.co.uk. If you have any queries or issues about any children or coaches, you should not hesitate to contact either Denise Hanley, Bruce Hanley or Gill Stringer who will treat any approaches in confidence.
We are looking forward to another great season Yours sincerely,
