Olympic stars at Phoenix weekend of hockey

Phoenix Hockey club will be hosting a Bank Holiday busting weekend of hockey this week, to celebrate the official opening of their new pitch. As part of the celebrations, on Saturday 3rd May, the club will host a special VIP match, with a variety of international and national league players gracing the new blue coloured pitch.

On show will be GB international Iain Mackay, originally from Braintree, and part of the 2012 London Olympic squad, and also former double Olympians Nick Thompson and John Shaw, also a world cup silver medallist. The return of Nick Thompson, a former coach at the club, is particularly resonant, as he opened the clubs original astro turf pitch in 1996.

Phoenix Hockey, which has recently won the sought after Club First Accreditation, has worked with various sport funding bodies and its membership, to be able to develop its playing facilities and the new pitch will sustain the club, and hockey, for years to come. The club has made strides in taking hockey into the local community, notably with its back to hockey programme, as well as a new programme for players with disabilities.

The official opening ceremony is at 12.15, followed by the VIP match at 13.00.

A programme of youth coaching will also be on show prior to this, from 10.00.

The club extends a warm welcome to all on the day
