This match marked a new first for Phoenix HC in that it was the first friendly match played by this group of players and indeed we believe the first such match outside of a tournament in the country.
Our players started training under the Flyerz banner in November 2014 and completed the initial course run but carried on. The title Flyerz is used by clubs for sections of clubs for people with disabilities. It was fitting to have Waltham Forest as the opposition as they started the Flyerz concept nationally.
We were blessed with good weather for the match and support for both sides in a 7 a side match run over several 10 minute sections, and watched by the Chairman of Braintree District Council, Councillor Sue Wilson.
Early on Waltham took the lead but through some good play but Phoenix came back with Andrew Demon Spice leading the attack well, indeed both sides scored a few more goals that were disallowed.
But the day was not about results but enjoyment and fun for those taking part and those watching and that was achieved, with good food afterwards, then the presentation of course certificates to Phoenix Flyerz and topped by a special birthday cake baked for Chris Whitfield.
