On Friday 8th November 2019, twenty U14 and U16 Braintree Blue Hornets players were treated to a coaching masterclass with ex England international Nicky Thompson. Nick’s coaching and playing history is exceptional. His International career spanned ten years, during which time he received 196 caps for England and Great Britain, scoring 56 goals.

Having enjoyed coaching the U21 England Squad (2006-2008) and assisting the preparation of the GB Goalkeepers for the Beijing Olympics, Nick is now firmly concentrating on his coaching. Developing and motivating players for the future is his priority.

Nicky began by instilling the necessity of pace, footwork, balance and core strength on the players before focusing on key skills; in defence for out-letting from a defensive position and in attack for fast paced ball movement and vision. He was quick to praise and encourage the players whilst honestly highlighting any areas for improvement with a commanding style and humorous approach.

Despite the chill of the evening the players were kept busy through fast drills and a close quarters final game testing their new skills to the maximum.
