Braintree Hockey club changed its name from Phoenix Hockey Club which was formed in 2009 through the merger of Braintree Hockey Club and Dunmow Hockey Club, playing at Braintree's ground "The Four Releet" on Bocking Church Street, Braintree.
The club currently comprises five Men's teams, three Ladies' teams and a thriving junior section known as The Blue Hornets. All play at The Four Releet, except for the junior section who use the facilities at Felsted School. The senior Men's teams play in the East League, the Ladies' teams play in the Essex League.
The club is growing fast and replaced the carpet on the all weather pitch (laid in 1996) in December 2014, as well as replacing the current club house in the near future. These developments are being funded through social events and fund-raisers, as well as through the kind support of our sponsors.
The club was awarded Active Braintree District Community Club of the year award in 2014 and 2017.
Season 2015/16 saw an improved structure for the development through the ranks of our Junior players from Blue Hornets by using Men's 3 and Ladies 3 teams as Academy teams. Ladies finished runners up in Division 5 while Men's finished 4th in Division 8se.
At the AGM in 2016 it was agreed to change the name of the club to Braintree Hockey Club, giving a clearer indication where we play, therefore the junior section become Braintree Blue Hornets. Decisions were also made to pursue CASC (Community Amateur Sports Club) status and re-organise the club accordingly.
On 1 May 2017 the Braintree Hockey Club came under Braintree Hockey Club Ltd. This changed a history going back to 1990's of where there was a club and a company ltd by shares to maintain and run the facilities, now it is one body and the company is Ltd by guarantee. The structure and rules (which become by-laws to the articles of association) had to be updated to make this club fit for going forward.
Season 2016/17 saw Braintree achieve silverware with the Men's Knights winning Div 9se in the East League.
During 2017/18 Braintree Men's 1 and 3 both secured promotion by finishing runners up in their respective leagues. Ladies entered a 4th team for the first time for many years if ever but unfortunately Ladies were relegated at the end of the season. Our Juniors, Blue Hornets, had 4 teams of different age groups making the Regional Finals. Off the field the Club achieved CASC status.
It is pleasing to see that Rush Hockey goes from strength to strength while Walking Hockey is gradually increasing membership and provides a way for people to play the game who do not or cannot run around. 2018 also saw the Flyerz section restarted and they went to the Flyerz national competition held during the World Cup and came away as champions.
