Second set of matches

In what is becoming a theme this season, the U10 boys were greeted by a rainy start to this day’s hockey! The started really well and there were some moments of really strong play and every player worked hard when called upon. There is still work to do this season but after two games the signs are really encouraging!

Blue Hornets 1 – 0 Bishops Stortford
(Aaron Hughes)
Blue Hornets played some of their best hockey this season in the opening game. Aaron Hughes scored a well taken goal, but some of the passing movements in the opposition D were brilliant to watch and if it wasn’t for some great goalkeeping Blue Hornets could easily have scored 3 or more!

Blue Hornets 3 – 0 Old Loughts
(James Malthouse, Zach Johnson ,Zach Johnson)
Another really great performance in this game. Blue Hornets scored three goals and it could easily have been more. Another great attacking performance.

Blue Hornets 0 – 1 Hertford
Hertford do seem to be “the team to beat” this year. They were playing without a goalkeeper which should have given the Blue Hornets forwards some great opportunities, however it did mean that Hertford had one extra outfield player. Their excellent technical play and additional outfield player meant that they were able to control the game and restrict Blue Hornets attacking opportunities. The Blue Hornets defenders played really well, and it looked very much like they would hold on for the draw but in the dying seconds Hertford managed to break though and grab the victory!
Special recognition in this game to George Nichol who made his debut in goal. After keeping two clean sheets in his first two games he pulled off some excellent saves in this game, after which the opposition coach remarked on how “your keeper was fantastic!”

Blue Hornets 2 – 2 Saffron Walden
(Zach Johnson, James Malthouse)
If Blue Hornets were unfortunate to concede against Hertford they really rode their luck against Saffron Walden. Zach and James both scored good goals that were matched by Saffron Walden but in the final minutes Saffron Walden had some excellent opportunities and were denied a goal that was scored just moments after the final whistle!

As you saw last game we currently do not have a specialist goalkeeper so I will be asking for volunteers to take a turn in goal. If your son is interested in playing in goal (or you know of any young goalkeepers out there) then let me know!
